History and Fun Facts about the Edison Ballroom

  • Thomas Edison turned on the lights (by remote control from his home in New Jersey) on the opening day in 1931.
  • In the 1930s the space was used as an art-deco performance space for famous bands and singers from the Swing Era; then it was transformed into a Broadway Theatre; afterwards it was turned into the famous “Supper Club”.
  • Perhaps the most famous Broadway production at  the Edison Theater was “Oh! Calcutta!”, which was the longest running musical in Broadway history at the time.
  • Other Broadway shows at this theater include: Julius Caesar (1950), Happy Birthday, Wanda June and That’s Entertainment.
  • The following is a partial list of artists who performed at the Supper Club: Bob Dylan, Van Morrison, Rod Stewart, Liza Minnelli, Jon Bon Jovi and Tony Bennett.
  • A multi-million-dollar renovation of Times Square’s Supper Club speaks to the ritzy Art Deco style of its original thirties form.
